PRESENTATION SKILLS

Remember nobody is born as natural speaker!

Greatest speakers today have not just become great overnight! They do have spent lot of time practicing, reviewing and reading about the way to improve, getting the specific one-to-one feedback on how to improve and also having lots of specialized training and the coaching.

It will take time and also effort to read, absorb and apply. It will also takes time and efforts to attend the training courses or the seminars and get a good professional training. If you want to differentiate yourself at the work by becoming a great presenter, then it is something which is certainly worth investing the time in.

There is the simple structure into which nearly all the presentations must fit. This comprises of the three clearly identifiable parts - Introduction followed by the main body and finally the conclusion.

Often this is expressed as:

  • Tell what you are going to tell them

  • Tell them

  • Tell what you have told them.

The good guide for breakdown of the presentation is 10/80/10 rule - where the introduction and the conclusion are each allotted of 10% of a presentation time with a main body comprising of about 80%. For example the 30 minute presentation should have 3 minutes for introduction and conclusion each and the main body lasting for 24 minutes. This formula may be applied for any length of the presentation.

TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOURSELF

Take good care of yourself. If you are lazy and dress like
a slob you will feel inferior to others and your self
esteem will become lower and lower. Take care of your body
(it's the only one you have). Treat it with respect and eat
healthy foods and take supplements to be sure to get the
nutrition you need for a healthy body, strong bones,
clearer skin and an all over feeling of wellness and
energy. Groom yourself every day and look your very best.
Your self confidence and self esteem will grow stronger the
more you take care of your physical self.

and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness
never decreases by being shared - Buddha

IS THE QUEST FOR PERFECTION PRACTICAL?

Perfection is one of the most indescribable attributes of our life. Many seek it and yet, one has to ask whether all this pursuit of perfection practical? Many believe it is so, and say that they stand for something more in life than the average man does. Surely this sounds noble and makes sense to some degree, and yet something about it sounds arrogant, and even over the top. Why do you suppose this is?
Not long ago a gentleman asked me; "So are you a perfectionist?" In quick response I said, "No, I really don't have time to be a erfectionist”. Being a perfectionist in anything you do is no mean task. You need to rework, review, correct, repair, do afresh etc when you aspire to be a perfectionist. It is a very time consuming and tedious process. It can drain you. And it may not give the result you are expecting. But the output of a perfectionist will be far more superior to other mediocre works
Seeking excellence is fine. But it should not block you from your ultimate goal. Your ultimate goal can be for instance winning an essay contest, meeting a deadline or writing something of tremendous importance. Several poets, actors, architects, artists and authors get into a terrible problem when they look for excellence.
Innovators and inventors also often fail to bring their creations forward, as they work so very hard towards that final percent of perfection. 100% perfection is, ultimately, completely unattainable. Seeking perfection is very costly in time and money; it makes the whole concept of perfection completely irrelevant.
Let me make a recommendation to you; never let perfection keep you from your goals and dreams. Always move towards excellence, but do not
make that your end game. Please consider this and how it applies to you.

YOUR GOALS SHOULD BE REALLY BIG

Only a big goal can motivate you. The journey to attain a big goal is very exciting. During that journey the individual may face a lot of difficulties. But he has to continue his efforts with a positive frame of mind.
One should aim for the stars. A big goal helps an individual to utilize his real potential. It inspires him. It propels him to achieve something which he had not even dreamed of achieving. If he harmonizes all his activities towards that goal, he will certainly achieve that goal. A big goal compels an individual to focus more.
Without a big goal, an individual’s energies will not be utilized fully. He will remain just average and mediocre. When you have a big goal, you will dream big, think big and act big. This increases the possibility of achieving that goal.
When we look back to study the life stories of great men, we can see that all of them were having big dreams which were considered impossible and impractical then. Great personalities like Mahatma Gandhi, Madam Curie, Abraham Lincoln etc demonstrated that nothing is impossible in this world when you have a great goal and dream.

LEARNING IS THE REAL WEALTH

A man without learning can't achieve much. He faces a lot of difficulties in his life. He will be forced to depend on others for even small day to day activities. In contrast, a learned man enjoys a lot of freedom. He is respected everywhere. He is more powerful.

The accumulated wisdom of a learned man can't be stolen by anybody. It is 100% safe in his brain. The knowledge and wisdom gained by a learned man is imperishable. But what is the state of material things one possesses? These are perishable. An individual lives in constant fear to protect his material wealth.

A learned man can command respect in even alien lands. He will be treated well everywhere. So one should strive to gather knowledge in abundance in his chosen field in order to succeed.

THE IMPORTANCE OF POSITIVE ATTITUDE

In order to be a success, you need to develop a positive mental attitude. Without a positive attitude nothing will work. When you do a work, you should believe that the work will be done well. Without that belief your work may not be completed properly in time.

Suppose you are going to attend a job interview. Naturally, you will be under tremendous tension on the interview day. How will you cope with that tension? You can very easily cope with that tension with positive attitude and logical thinking. You can think that other candidates are also facing the same problem. Moreover, a little bit of tension will enhance your performance in the interview.

You can expect to succeed in the interview and even visualize your success. This will give you a lot of confidence to face the interview. In short, firm self-belief together with a positive mental attitude will help you to achieve success in your chosen endeavour.

THE VALUE OF A SMILE

A smile costs nothing. But it helps the giver as well as the receiver. How? The giver feels good about it. The receiver gets the non verbal message that the giver likes him and felt happy to see him. He also feels very happy. A smile improves relationships. It creates a very positive atmosphere everywhere. Therefore we should learn to smile more often. Yes. Just like kids. By watching children we can understand the value of a smile.
